Top 3 Vegan Myths About Nutrition

There are so many vegan ‘experts’ online today you have to double check everything you see. Especially about vegan nutrition.

I remember when I first started my life as a vegan I heard that vegans must take iron supplements or they could die. And this was from a so called vegan expert on YouTube. Of course most vegans don’t have any issues with iron. If you eat a whole food diet that is of a wide variety of foods you should be fine. But just like non-vegans, there are some that do need iron assistance. But not everyone.

Dr. Michael Greger is one of the most respected authorities on plant based diets and veganism. His site nutritionfacts.org is a wealth of information on vegan nutrition and scientific studies. Recently he was asked what the top 3 vegan myths about nutrition were. His answers were entertaining and informative as always. I especially find #3 to be absolutely true and so many people ignore it. Get all 3 of his top vegan myths on the next page.

1. Vegan automatically equals health

vegan myths 1

Some college vegans are living on mostly french fries and beer. That’s great for the animals but not for your body. There is a healthy way to be vegan and a unhealthy way to be vegan. People eating a plant based diet should actually be eating plants! Fruits, vegetable, nuts and seeds.

2. Vitamin B12 Isn’t important

vegan myths 2

Vegans need to insure they are getting high quality B12 in their diet. It’s even more important than you might realize. Some vegans think this isn’t necessary but it can have dire health consequences.

Myth #3, and my personal favorite, is on the next page

3. Eating vegan is all you need to do for health

vegan myths 3

No. Vegans need to exercise. Just like vegans need to wear their seat belts like everyone else, practice safe sex like everyone else and use common sense, they also need to exercise. You need to practice healthy habits in addition to eating the healthiest diet on the plant.

If you would like to watch the entire video that these questions and answers came from it’s on the next page. It’s very informative and Dr. Greger just has a way with explaining things that always makes him entertaining to watch.
